Many contributed to the development of Probo. The initial idea came from Ivan Hermans from the Anty Foundation. Researchers ing. Jelle Saldien and ir. Kristof Goris developed the first prototype under supervision of prof. dr. ir. Dirk Lefeber and dr. ir. Bram Vanderborght (formerly dr. ir. Bjorn Verrelst).
Different projects use Probo as research and educational platform.
Probo Development Team
This team developed the robotic platform and the Robotic User Interface (RUI). They perform the management over the complete Probo project and open the use of the robot for the research community.

Probo Multidisciplinary Research Team
Different researchers use the robot Probo as research platform in one of the three domains: technical areas (as vision, speech, AI and cognition), medical areas (exploration RAT) and social and psychological areas (to focus on HRI and emotional communication).
HOA16: Development of a natural human-robot interaction. Study and implementation of joint attention mechanisms.
One of the essential research topics regarding “Cognitive Interactive Robotics" is the realization of natural communication possibilities between the robot and the user (e.g. children). The three main objectives of this project are to develop an attention system in function of a natural communication between robot and a human (child) and evaluate these mechanisms using the robot Probo. Also an automatic treatment of chronic pain will be developed. This project develops the cognitive abilities of the robot to increase its autonomy and come to useful applications of the robot. A strong multidisciplinary team is established to achieve these goals. Within this project no funding is foreseen for the further development of the robot itself.

Probo Educational Team
Together with high schools, secondary schools or universities will Probo will be used as educational platform. In those projects the students can work on a specific element of the project, knowing that their work is part of a bigger concept. In this way the project is a great approach to motivate students, to stimulate new technological innovation.
